Madsonic Support

Someone who has some good ideas to what to run madsonic on ? A nas were its supportet or very cheap compututer that does not use much power?.
Right now its running on a lapton. and i think it use to much power

I run it in a virtual server on my main workstation PC. I have allocated 4gb RAM and 120gb hard drive (and 2 CPU cores). Music is stored on the workstation itself, so I "map" a location on my Linux VM to the location of my media on the PC and it all works fine.

There are an infinite range of answers here. It all depends on what you want to have available to how many users. If you're serving up 128kbps mp3's that don't need to be transcoded and you only have 5 users and never more than 2 at a time, you can use a Raspberry pi with a NAS drive attached and probably get away with 1Mbps internet connection with 512mbps upload speed.

At the other end if you want to stream multiple Blue Ray feeds at 1920X1080, it will really help if you have dual 8 core cpu's sitting on a decent RAID array, connected to an upload speed somewhere between 35 - 100 Mbps.

And there are an infinite range of performance capabilities and options in between.

I have a trusty old HP ex485 MediaSmart Server that I "Tim Allened" with a 3Ghz Xeon dual core and 4gb ram with 4 2 TB hard drives. It serves a Madsonic music only site that can handle 50 users without any problem.

My primary Madsonic server which has a lot of video on it has 2.83Ghz dual quad-core Xeon's, 16 GB ram and pulls the stored media off an 8 - 2TB drive RAID 50 array. It can handle 3 Blue ray streams internally and one or two from outside.

Everything is fed to a 35/35 FIOS internet connection.

Future plans -

I want to build a 4 node rack server with each node having dual 8 core cpu's and 128Gb of ram on each node connected to another RAID array using 7200rpm 4 TB drives. I also want to bump my connection speed to 150/65 Fios to feed the beast. As soon as I'm done paying 60k/yr for college tuitions for my kids, I'll get started.

Yes, I know all manner of options. It all depends on what your objectives are as to which solution is best for your needs. Budget is also important.

Probably one of the best all around solutions would be the new intel barebones box.

I also watch for refurb deals and ebay auctions for cost sabing solutions. My dual xeon cpuserver is a repurposed HP XW8600 workstation that I picked up on ebay for $500 several years ago. It was a steal for that kind of power at the time.

But if all you want is a music server then go as cheap as you want with a barebones unit - add OS - add as big a hard drive as you want - and away you go. I've set up atom based netbooks with Subsonic just for testing - it wasn't terrible - a bit slower than I was used to with my power boxes, but if all you want is music it was ok.

It all comes down to speed and storage; how much you want or need. That's what determines how much you need to spend.

I bought a raspberrypi and im going to try to see how i will handle madsonic

it works but its very very slow on homepage. someone know how to configurate it best or how to speed it up ?

Sounds like an expensive set up. Using raspberry pi to make it cost less is smart idea here.
